It's about time...

"But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope..." Lamentations 3:21

I love empty notebooks.  I bought a really cute notebook a few months ago when I was back-to-school shopping for the kids. My darling daughter tried to claim it, but I resisted and told her that it was mine. When she asked me what it was for, I had to admit I didn't know...but I felt that there was purpose behind it.

My adventure for 2010 was to read the Bible cover to cover in one year. God was faithful (even when I wasn't!!) and he brought me through the year with a reading guide full of check marks and a heart and mind that know him more than I did this time last year. It was exciting to place a little check mark in the box each day (or several check marks when I got behind) and feel like I made progress. What I realize now is how precious that time in God's word has become. After I checked off that last box on December 31st, my heart sank a bit. I wondered, now what?? I felt very strongly that I wasn't just supposed to start over with that reading plan on January 1st, but what was I going to do?

That is where my blank notebook comes in. God just wants me to spend time with him. It is amazing how, when I actively seek him, he is always ready to engage my heart and mind. So this year, it isn't so much about check marks and "visible" progress - that was last year's journey. This year, it's about my time. Spending time with my heavenly father will renew my mind (Romans 12:2), and allow me to discern his will. If I take refuge in him, he promises to hide me in the secret place of his presence. (Psalm 31) That sounds like a great place to be!

It is a new year and a chance to start fresh, just like a blank notebook. I can't wait to see where God brings me in 2011!

Blessings to you on your journey!
